The major ninth sharp fifth chord extends maj9 with an augmented fifth (1-3-♯5-7-9). It combines the wide brightness of the ninth with the restless lift of ♯5—less common than maj9(♯11), but useful in fusion and modern jazz when a major center needs altered-fifth shimmer without Lydian ♯11.

    Construction

Think maj7(♯5) plus 9, or maj9 with a raised fifth.

    Usage

Color hits, passing chords, and cinematic pads on major pedals.

    Examples

    • Fusion keyboard voicings
    • Modern jazz reharmonizations
    • Film scoring for luminous tension

    Play

Balance ♯5 against 7 and 9; thin dense registers.

    Ear-training cues

maj9-like openness with a widened fifth.
