Cis Quinte / Powerchord

Grundton und Quinte ohne Terz; neutraler Powerchord fuer druckvolle Riffs.

The dominant thirteenth chord is one of the richest functional dominant colors in tonal harmony. It preserves the directional force of V7 while adding upper warmth and width, so the chord feels harmonically complete without becoming overly harsh. In charts this appears as C13, and in practice it is a staple in jazz, soul, funk, and advanced pop arranging.

Construction

The full theoretical stack is 1-3-5-♭7-9-11-13. In C13 this can be represented as C-E-G-B♭-D-F-A. Real voicings usually omit at least one inner tone, because clarity and line direction matter more than literal completeness.

Usage

Choose 13 when a plain V7 sounds too dry but a heavily altered dominant feels too aggressive. It is excellent in cadences, turnarounds, and groove contexts where you want harmonic sophistication plus steady forward motion. In ensemble writing, 13 voicings also blend naturally with horns and layered keyboard textures.

Examples

  • Jazz standards - V13 in ii-V-I and extended turnaround loops
  • Soul/funk comping - broad dominant pads under melodic hooks
  • Contemporary pop bridges - refined dominant lift before chorus return

Play

Prioritize the guide tones (3 and ♭7), then place 13 in a clear top or upper-middle register. If the voicing gets muddy, remove the 5 or 11 before removing the color tones. A good 13 voicing should sound rich, legible, and still unmistakably dominant.

Function in progressions

Most often, 13 appears as a functional V heading to I or i, but it can also color secondary dominants without losing tonal focus. Compared with altered dominants, it offers less bite but more harmonic breadth, making it ideal when the cadence should feel strong yet elegant.

Common voicings / omissions

On piano, shell-plus-color structures such as (3, ♭7, 9, 13) often outperform full stacks. On guitar, compact grips with 3, ♭7, and 13 are usually clearer than trying to include every extension. In band settings, let bass carry the root so upper voices can stay spacious and articulate.
