Ready to train your ears to recognize one of the most foundational sounds in music history? We have built a brand-new ear training guide for you! Today, we are focusing on the minor seventh interval and sharing the best techniques to help you instantly identify its moody, soulful, and evocative sound whenever you hear it.

    What is a Minor Seventh?

In music theory, the minor seventh (often abbreviated as m7) is a crucial interval that spans ten semitones (or half steps). It is famously known as the harmonic backbone of blues, jazz, and classic rock—serving as the essential ingredient that turns a basic minor triad into a rich minor seventh chord, or a major triad into a tension-filled dominant seventh chord.

Unlike perfectly consonant intervals, the minor seventh possesses a distinct, mild dissonance. Its acoustic profile is inherently expressive: it sounds wide, unresolved, and deeply yearning. It holds a unique space in music because it feels urgent enough to demand a resolution, yet smooth enough to be used as a stable, vibey color tone in modern R&B and lo-fi tracks.

    Learn with Real Music Examples

Instead of practicing with boring, clinical beeps, we believe the fastest way to build flawless relative pitch is by listening to real songs. For this edition, we have curated a diverse selection highlighting the ascending, melodic minor seventh—where the lower note steps directly up to the higher note.
