D flat Minor seventh

The minor seventh chord adds one note—a minor seventh above the root—to the minor triad. That extra tone softens the triad’s edge and turns it into the default “funk, soul, and jazz” chord: warm enough to sit on for bars at a time, but still clearly minor. On lead sheets you will see it as Cm7, Cmin7, or C–7; in Roman numerals it is the classic ii7 in major keys and a stable i7 or iv7 in minor-oriented progressions.

How it’s built

Take the minor triad (root, minor third, perfect fifth) and add the minor seventh interval. In C, that is C–E♭–G–B♭. You can also think of it as the chord built on the second degree of the B♭ major scale—so it shares the same key signature as F major when you spell Cm7 diatonically.

Do not confuse it with the half-diminished chord (m7♭5): that chord has a diminished fifth and a different harmonic job. The minor seventh has a perfect fifth and feels stable and “round” by comparison.

Usage

In pop and R&B, Cm7 often works as a IV in the key of G minor or as a ii before a dominant in F. In jazz, ii7–V7–I is the backbone of countless tunes; the minor seventh on ii keeps the progression smooth and avoids the brighter major-seventh color. Funk and disco rhythm parts often vamp on a single m7 chord or alternate m7 shapes up the neck for a static, groovy pad.

In neo-soul and contemporary gospel, stacked m7 voicings with extensions (9, 11, 13) are everywhere—they carry emotion without the tension of dominant harmony.

Examples

  • Bill Withers — Just the Two of Us (Gm7 flavor in the harmonic layout)
  • Stevie Wonder — numerous tunes using minor seventh colors in keyboard and bass
  • Herbie Hancock — Chameleon (B♭m7 vamp as a harmonic center)
  • Death Cab for Cutie — I Will Follow You into the Dark (gentle minor-seventh guitar voicing)
  • Countless jazz standards where ii7 precedes V7 in major and minor

Play

For comping, prioritize time feel and voice leading into the next chord. Practice the smallest useful shapes first (especially root–third–seventh “shell” voicings), then add the fifth or color tones only when they stay clear in the texture.
